Harsha,

Thanks for writing. I believe that English is necessary and we are benefited by it. But I do not think that we need only two languages: English and one regional language. Hindi has already been in practice for ages in India and this is one way to bring people together and keep them together. I think we need three languages: Hindi, English and one regional language. Hindi is never ever waste of time, money or effort. I believe in learning not forgetting. We can easily learn a third language but what is the need to forget something???

Today we have Central govt. which is more concerned about the spreading the language rather than spreading the education. It wants to educate the 70 % of India's population in Hindi and want to make it a Hindi nation. What is the need for such an revolution to be brought?
We are able to earn some jobs in this outsourcing market due to knowledge of English. If the politicians had their way back in 1950's and made Hindi as the language for India ; we would have been learning Hindi and would be no use today!
The recent episode of Samajwadi Party’s Maharasthra MLA Abu Azmi of pleading ignorance of not knowing Marathi even after being a elected representative shows the ignorance of the politicians towards the people's language.
In order to please the Central govt. ; state govt are forced to concentrate more on the imparting Hindi education to its citizens rather than educating them in the right way.
India needs 2 languages, English and the language of the state! Hindi is such a waste of time, money, effort considering the value add it kicks in..
PS : I am not from Madras or Chennai.
